Lassie and her friends leave Maine on Mr. Carver's power cruiser to go to Florida. With them is Mr. Ralph Jager, a staff illustrator, who does not fancy dogs.; Traveling up the Orinoco in search for the nesting grounds of the scarlet ibis, Lassie, Gerry and Rocky meet the Akawos.; Returning to the homestead in the Matto Grosso, Lassie and her friends expect to be met by Lalo, the caretaker, but instead they meet Pablo Mira and two thieftakers who are hunting Lalo for the murder of Mira's partner Tomas.
